Watershed
Good news for fans of Watershed, formerly located in Decatur; the new location in Brookwood Hills is open. If you're into seeing people like Colin Firth, The Buzz at AJC says this is where you'll find 'em! Billy and I hit it up for our Date Night last weekend to check one more item off The List. Creative Loafing said one of the top 100 Dishes is the Crawfish Pie. Imagine a crawfish etouffee (which I think is Creole for "comfort food") wrapped in a pie shell and deep fried. That's what you see below, and it's delicious.
Still, as tasty as the pie was, it was easily surpassed by the Special appetizer, Sockeye Salmon Tartare. Salmon is not all created equally tasty, and, in my opinion, sockeye is much more flavorful than Pink Salmon. The preparation of the tartare was with a little bit of diced shallots, olive oil, and just a pinch of salt/pepper. Paired with slices of English Cucumber and Wow!
Watershed is known for its Fried Chicken Night (now on Wednesdays in the new location), so we decided to make it more of a fish evening. Billy ordered the grouper which, according to the menu, was supposed to come on a bed of sauteed spinach. Alas, our server didn't explain the substitution of corn succotash, but it was a worthy alternative. On the side were fried shrimp and andouille croquettes (aka, little balls of happiness).
We ordered the cauliflower (four syllables) as a side. They were perfectly cooked, but decidedly under-seasoned for my taste. This surprised me because when I compare notes with other friends who've visited Watershed, they've complained that their dishes tended to be too salty, naming the ham entree and the Cowgirl steak, as the big offenders. That was NOT the problem here! Next time we'll get something different from the veggie plate menu.
Perhaps it was the salmon starter, but I was drawn to the Salmon a la plancha with ribbons of perfectly seasoned zucchini. MMMMmmmm. Nothing wrong with this dish! Finally it was onto desserts. We loved the dessert descriptions and I opted for the "Very Good Chocolate Cake" in a jar. Loved the execution, but the flavor was just O.K. Considering I'm the person who always orders fruity desserts, you may not want to trust my opinion!Billy opted for "The Mess" which promised at least a little fruit in the form of cherries. I didn't think the look was too messy, but their mesh of flavors DID feel like a bit of a mess.
I would be remiss if I didn't note the acoustics of the new location are - um - challenging. Imagine the din caused by sounds of a big crowd bouncing off of wood floors, concrete walls, and a wood ceiling. With so little to tame the noise, even the servers speak as little as possible to you. This is NOT a good spot for the Awkward Date Night chat --or much of any chat really. Just plan on eating well and high-fiving your dinner companion!
