Watermelon Cutting Made Easy

Watermelon...it is the chief of this world's luxuries, king by the grace of God over all the fruits of the earth. When one has tasted it, he knows what the angels eat. It was not a Southern watermelon that Eve took; we know it because she repented. - Mark Twain, Pudd'nHead Wilson

I am guilty of buying watermelons too early in the summer and being disappointed with the lackluster flavor.

However, for the past few weeks, every melon I've had has been absolutely perfect!  However, the challenge for every melon lover is how to cut up the fruit quickly.

A few years ago I discovered an efficient technique for cutting the largest and most unruly melons by slicing away the skin. I was pleased to see the method was exactly the same as used in this fabulous video.

Check it out!

Not sure you caught the technique?  Here it is in slow motion (I'm not nearly as fast as this guy, but this way is still speedy)

First, cut the ends off of the melon so you have a flat, even surface for working.Next, turn the melon so it sits flat and starting from the top, cut off the rind in an even stroke to the bottom.  This may take practice, but even if you have to make multiple cuts, you'll save time.Turn the melon so the next strip of rind is in front of you and make the cut again. Keep cutting and turning the melon until all of the rind is removed. When all of the rind is removed, cut the melon in half and work on one half at a time.Turn the melon half so the middle section lays flat on the cutting board and make 1/2 to 1 inch horizontal cuts across the melon. Repeat 3-4 times depending on how small you want the pieces. (Note - in the video the man wore a steel glove so he wouldn't cut his hand; you should be more careful!)Gently cut across the top of the melon first in the north/south direction, then in the east/west direction.  This will give you beautiful dices!Put into a bowl and watch the melon disappear!Stay cool friends!!
