The List: Empire State South

Well, it’s happened.  We are a little over halfway through the 2013 Best Dish List and we think we’ve found the best of the best.  The find is SO remarkable even Billy won’t shut up about it. The restaurant? Empire State South. The find? The Farm Egg.

I'll grant you this isn't the most eye pleasing dish, but don't let that throw you.

The description of this dish is technically, "breakfast sausage, beech mushrooms, crisp carolina gold rice, corn puree, scallions, " but I would describe it as a slice of heaven.  When I told the host I was coming in to try the dish he said, “people write poetry” after eating this.

That. Good.

Of course, we also loved the other items from the list.  The charcuterie was the best version I have ever had.  The meat selection was like visiting a deli in Spain – utterly delightful.I especially loved the spicy sausage.  (the close up!)Also on the List is the Superfood salad.  I reviewed that dish here and waxed on about the incredible variety of flavors.  Even if you're not a "salad person," you'll love this dish.  Just note that it’s only available during lunch. If you are at dinner and still hungry after the appetizers, you won't be disappointed in the ribeye which not only comes in a reasonable portion, but also has delicious mushrooms.  Mmmmm.I especially loved the duck.  This dish isn't always on the menu, but I drift there when it is.  The seared skin, bok choy, radishes, and mix of a sweet and savory sauce make it a party for your mouth.I always save room for dessert! This visit I had the Choux-Rros  which is  a fried dough with mascarpone mousse, peach caramel, and peach sorbet. Tasty enough, but nothing compares to the Phatty Cakes they used to serve.  I believe their pastry chef has left Atlanta since I can't find them anywhere... ah well!Empire State South is always a favorite, so if you’re looking for a special treat (we went for our anniversary), definitely go and get the farm egg, the rest of your choices are up to you!  You won’t be disappointed.
