Shhhh. Don't Speak!
“You never really learn much from hearing yourself speak.” George Clooney
"I want to be a better learner"
My friend mentioned this noble goal recently and so I asked him to explain his strategy. I expected to hear about classes, reading, or discussion groups, but he didn't describe any of the typical avenues.
Instead, he simply said, "I've decided to talk less."
Hmmm. Interesting.
I couldn't articulate my real response.
Wow. That's it? That's your strategy?
Still, the longer I think about it, the less crazy his approach seems. How much would I learn if I spent less energy articulating my thoughts and more time focusing on what other people were saying?
I can't help but wonder how different my day would be if I made input a bigger priority than output.
Maybe today I'll exercise my quiet side.
Do you want to join me?
